Process Flow Calculations

The square-edged concentric orifice plate is a commonly used flow measuring device for liquid, steam, and gas services. Implementing or modifying a flow loop that utilizes an orifice plate and differential pressure transmitter can be complicated and time consuming. One must first gather a large amount of data and then perform some fairly complex calculations. These utilities are my attempt to put all the necessary information into one convenient location and provide easy to use flow calculators. Flow measurement engineering is a very broad and complicated subject.  For a single source very exhaustive handbook, I recommend Flow Measurement Engineering Handbook by Richard W. Miller.

The Range Changer is used to change the range of an existing d/p flow meter. Enter the current flow range, the d/p transmitter's current range, and the new desired flow range, and the applet will calculate the new d/p range for the transmitter. Alternativly, you can enter the current flow range, the d/p transmitter's current range, and a new d/p transmsitter range, and the applet will calculate the new flow range.

PID Loop Analyzer is a software tool designed to help you optimally tune your control loops with very little process disruption. You perform an open loop bump test on your production loop and provide the test data to PID Loop Analyzer, and it models your process and suggests PID tuning parameters based on Lambda tuning rules. It allows you to select safe settings from aggressive to conservative. You may also select "Trial and Error" and tune it by trial and error. A version optimized for your phone is also available.

PID Loop Simulators enable you to model and simulate flow loops, level loops, and temperature loops. Use them to model your processes and tune them without disrupting production. Note the "Time X" feature to speed up time itself. A controller with a signal generator connected to its input is also provided. Use the signal generator to step change the controller's input or ramp it up or down at any desired rate. It is great for demonstrating the function of Proportional (Gain), Integral (Reset), and Derivative (Preact).

If you develop or modify Honeywell Safeview Files, this utility will render your valid safeview files in your browser allowing you to see and refine the results of your work before loading it onto a production station. Press Ctrl Shift I to see a tabular display of all the display elements. It is a handy utility. Give it a try.
